Space Marine vs. Tau Video Battle Report

One of the better Generals on the West Coast, who has gone to the finals and placed highly in bigger events plays at our store and I have always enjoyed the challenge of playing him.  He does Video Battle Reports and I thought you might like to see this one.  It is a contest between my Unorthodox Tau, vs. his QUAD Land Raider list.  I like how brief and complete his reports generally are.

Also, here is the link if you have trouble viewing it:

  1. Ah, added the list I see. It's true to your form. Looks like you went outside the box on this army. StingWings, but no Crisis Suits, you outflanked the Pathfinders and your deployment was pretty smart. So was his by reserving everything. 7 round game probably mitigated some of the impact that had, but you can never know thats going to happen.

When facing FOUR Land Raiders you'd think Tau would bring more than just THREE total Broadsides, all in their own expensive unit shells. It's a bit unusual to take so little anti-tank. The ending surprised me.

  2. This is actually more or less the tourney army I use. I think the one I used against him had a few more Kroot and a couple less things elsewhere now that I look at it again, but this is basically it.

Three Broadsides isn't nearly as many as you normally see, tis true. I just feel like it's overkill to take more when you can instead pour points into the Piranha's. I normally have target locks on three of them.
It subscribes to my basic tenet which is: there are only a few tanks you MUST kill to win. I want ENOUGH firepower to do that without sacrificing other areas of the army. Against FOUR Land Raiders, even after seven rounds, I only managed to kill 2, so I was pretty underprepared for such a list. Never seen a list like that. I am glad to see that I could handle it though because Black Templar are coming... I suspect such a list wil not be as rare once they come.

As for outflanking the Pathfinders, it had the desired effect of getting the Terminators moving laterally. I didn't mean for the Pathfinders themselves to get killed with the Devilfish, but wasn't careful enough when I placed them to avoid it. I assumed the Devilfish would be wrecked, but that I would get two rounds of Terminator attention instead of just one, plus some accuracy to help the one brodside that didn't seem to want to hit anything, ever. It turned out okay in the end as you saw, but still, something to improve upon. Kind of kicking myself over that one.

You mention the Stingwings. They worked beautifully. His character tried to wash them away but they were heartier than he anticipated and the exploding vehicle that wounded him wasn't helping matters. They are always useful to me somehow. They were again today.
